Project Scope

Retaining Wall pops up fast on I-75 rest area

A pavement repair project was recently completed at the Travel Information Center (rest area) located near Bowling Green, Ohio on north bound I-75 just before the State Route 6 overpass. The original plans didn't call for a retaining wall to be used, but as construction neared completion, it became clear that a retaining wall would be needed to stabilize the slope beneath the overpass.

With Thanksgiving just around the corner, and one of the busiest travel days of the year approaching fast, crews needed to install the wall quickly in order to have the rest area open in time to accommodate holiday travelers.

Redi-Rock was chosen because it could be installed very quickly as a gravity wall. The natural looking split limestone face was also a factor in the decision to use Redi-Rock. Instead of just a dull lifeless wall, these bold blocks add character to an otherwise plain structure, and act as a landmark for motorist making the "exciting" drive up I-75.

The wall was installed by Anderzack-Pitzen Construction Inc. of Metamora, Ohio. This was their first time working with the Redi-Rock system and just hours after the blocks were delivered to the site, the wall was constructed and the rest area was open by noon on Thanksgiving Eve.
