Storm Stability in Elkin, NC: Redi-Rock Gravity Wall Takes on Historic Hurricane Flooding
Project Details
Project Name: Elkin, NC Hurricane Wall Owner: City of Elkin, North Carolina Manufacturer: Carolina Concrete Products Location: Big Elkin Creek, Elkin, North Carolina Wall Type: Gravity Texture: Ledgestone Year Built: 2024 Wall Area: 5400 sq ft (501.7 sq m)

The Challenge: Build a Flood and Storm-Resistant Retaining Wall on Big Elkin Creek, North Carolina
Flooding wasn’t new to Elkin, North Carolina—but it was getting worse. Two to three flood events each year caused streambank erosion that crept closer to a major roadway and nearby businesses. The embankment along Big Elkin Creek was giving way, and conventional solutions weren’t viable due to space restrictions near the highway.
Engineers identified a flood protection wall system, specifically a precast concrete flood control retaining wall, as essential to stabilizing the bank and redirecting stormwater flow.
To protect its citizens and infrastructure, the City of Elkin committed to a solution that was fast to install, space-efficient, and built to withstand severe weather—a gravity wall system designed to support infrastructure in flood-prone zones.
Why Redi-Rock? A Resilient Solution That Proved Its Worth in a Real-World Disaster
Two days after construction wrapped up, Hurricane Helene swept through the region. Big Elkin Creek surged more than 7 ft (2.1 m) above the wall's top—submerging the completed gravity wall during what engineers called a 1,000-year flood event. The Result? While no wall solution could’ve contained the unprecedented surge, not a single Redi-Rock block shifted.

Redi-Rock Delivered:
- Engineering for Extreme Events: The precast gravity wall system withstood full submersion of more than 7 ft (2.1 m) during post-hurricane flooding with zero damage—proving its resilience when it mattered most.
- Geogrid-free Retention: Redi-Rock’s massive blocks created a gravity wall solution that didn’t require tie-backs or extensive excavation—ideal for tight spaces near critical infrastructure.
- Fast and Reliable Installation: The project team completed the wall within the tight 45-day window.
- Aesthetic Appeal: With the natural-stone-like appearance of the Ledgestone texture, the completed wall blends beautifully with the surrounding streambank.
- Proven Long-Term Performance: Built with durable wet-cast concrete, the wall has continued to perform flawlessly—even after six months and multiple flood events, there has been no shifting, settling, or material loss.
“Everything this wall has gone through in the last six months… I fully trust Redi-Rock. It’s done exactly what we needed it to do—and more. I couldn’t trust it more. It’s been great.”
