The Challenge: Small Excavation Footprint, Steep Slope

The Knox County, TN utility district needed to construct retaining walls for the site infrastructure for a sewer pump station without cutting into a steep slope topped by an active roadway. Geogrid couldn’t be used due to space constraints, and poured concrete cast-in-place walls weren’t feasible given the required wall height and site access. The utility district needed a solution that wouldn’t disrupt road traffic during construction, and that’s just where Redi-Rock fit the bill.

Why Redi-Rock? Built to Perform on Tight Sites

Bell Industries and contractor Advanced Wall Installation teamed up to deliver a gravity wall solution that could be installed quickly and safely—without closing the road above. The finished project features:

• Two Redi-Rock gravity walls using Redi-Rock XL blocks, one wall preserving parking and utility areas, and one retaining a nearby slope.
• 3,212 sq ft (298.4 sq m) of total Redi-Rock walls installed—no geogrid required.
• A roadway directly above the wall, requiring engineered load support.
• Ledgestone texture selected for a natural stone-like, aesthetically pleasing look.
• A top-of-wall fencing barrier for added safety and code compliance.
• Minimal overall excavation footprint, preserving the existing slope and road access.
