The Challenge: Trailblazing with the Right Retention
As the Village of Snowmass, Colorado began planning the Melton Ranch Trail project, they recognized the need for a reliable retaining wall system along a steep section of the new trail, where excavation was limited. Their previous positive experiences with Redi-Rock producer Signature Stone and contractor Gould Construction made Redi-Rock the natural choice, and they were confident that it would deliver impressive results once again.
The new trail system was designed with ambitious goals: linking several residential neighborhoods to the extensive Snowmass hiking and mountain biking network. Once completed, the trail would tie into the larger Rim Trail network and offer breathtaking views of the Roaring Fork Valley. Building in Snowmass’s rugged, mountainous terrain required a robust big-block system to ensure both the safety of trail-goers and the protection of the Village’s investment.

Why Redi-Rock? Aesthetics & Performance met Mountain Terrain.
With three other retaining wall projects completed with the Village of Snowmass and Gould Construction, Redi-Rock producer Signature Stone was confident that the precast retaining wall solution would be the optimal choice for this project. With Redi-Rock, the project features:
- The flexibility of the Redi-Rock gravity retaining wall system, with the 28 in (710 mm) top blocks featuring the “ski slope” top, allowed Gould Construction to grade seamlessly to the wall’s edge—creating a clean, integrated finish with fewer steps and greater efficiency.
- Retaining wall blocks with natural color variation and the Ledgestone texture for a realistic, natural stone-like appearance, far superior to field-sprayed color options.
- Redi-Rock’s composition of wet-cast concrete and integrated drainage features enables proper water flow, performance in alpine weather conditions, and long-term stability.
- A grand total of 8,052 sq ft (748.05 sq m) of Redi-Rock blocks was installed.
Redi-Rock is now the Village of Snowmass’s standard for retaining wall solutions, proving that the right block system and color palette can both safeguard and enhance infrastructure in challenging mountain settings. The Melton Ranch Trail highlights the strong partnership between the village and project stakeholders, blending innovative retaining wall systems with expert craftsmanship and adherence to local standards.
